Biography
Emily Hazelwood is an offshore energy consultant, marine conservation biologist, and co-founder of Blue Latitudes LLC, a women-owned marine environmental consulting firm and co-president of the Blue Latitudes Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. In 2018, Mrs. Hazelwood was listed on the Forbes 30 under 30 List for her contributions to ocean science and she has been further recognized as a leader in her field by Origin and Entrepreneur magazines. Mrs. Hazelwood has for over a decade, worked extensively with government and industry to unite science, policy, and communications to address environmental challenges within the offshore energy industry. She is a leader in effective advocacy for our oceans, taking the stage at TEDx Portsmouth in 2022 and at the New England Aquarium’s public lecture series in 2016, and is committed to elevating the scientific understanding of our oceans in communities worldwide.
Mrs. Hazelwood’s mission is to seek out silver linings in our oceans at the intersection of industry and the environment and to find and protect areas of our oceans that despite mounting adversity, are thriving, unknown to most of the world. Her portfolio of recent projects is diverse and includes utilizing remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to investigate the deep-sea impacts of oil infrastructure, to leading a successful research expedition to the Kingdom of Tonga in 2019 to investigate the effects of microplastics and ecotourism on the local humpback whale population. Mrs. Hazelwood has orchestrated research expeditions around the world, two of which have resulted in award-winning documentary films, and proudly carried an Explorer’s Club flag to Malaysia, documenting the below the surface biological transformations of an oil platform turned eco-tourism resort. Mrs. Hazelwood holds a master's degree in marine biodiversity and conservation from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Additionally, she is a member of the ScubaPro Deep Elite team and a PADI ambassador and divemaster.
In 2019 Mrs. Hazelwood co-founded the Blue Latitudes Foundation (BLF), a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to seeking out opportunities for conservation at the intersection of industry and the environment. Given the human demand for ocean resources, the BLF seeks to broaden the dialogue on traditional ocean conservation and find ways to use our oceans without using them up. In her role as co-president, Mrs. Hazelwood oversees strategic planning, fundraising, financial management, marine research, and governance, fostering growth and stability for the organization.
With over a decade of specialized technical experience, Mrs. Hazelwood excels in conducting environmental impact evaluations, commercial and recreational fishing analyses, and ROV survey work. She has successfully conducted environmental impact assessments for terrestrial and marine offshore resources in the United States and internationally, including projects in Thailand, Malaysia, and Mauritania. In addition to her technical expertise, Mrs. Hazelwood possesses strong skills in public education, communications, and outreach, allowing her to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
